Comparison of Tuition and Fees among Online Graduate GIS Programs

The University of Maine aggressively controls tuition and fees for both on-campus and distance graduate students to provide a world-class GIScience education at an affordable price. We minimally advertise to keep costs down. Online students completing the first five required courses receive the Graduate Certificate in GIS while those going on to complete a full program of ten courses receive the MS Spatial Informatics.

The University of Maine is a public land-grant, sea-grant, space-grant university and is the flagship university of the University of Maine System. Please compare the UMaine MS with other GIScience graduate programs not only on cost but on relevance of course content to your specific interests, needs and background, quality of courses, quality of professors, and quality and success of our past graduates.

If you are accepted into the UMaine online graduate program, you will be among an elite group of multidisciplinary students gaining the benefit of a very high quality GIScience graduate education at a very low comparative cost.

The cost estimates for university online programs in the above table are drawn from the indicated web links indicated and, except for UMaine, may NOT include all fees. All rates shown are for out-of-state students and some programs may have lower in-state rates. All courses at the University of Maine may be completed entirely at a distance. Synchronous optional discussion sessions are often available weekly with the UMaine professors. Although required synchronous sessions are rarely used with our courses, an occasional course may require some live sessions. Other university GIS programs listed above may require some campus visits and/or require mandatory synchronous online sessions in several of their courses..

[1] For 2018-2019, $549/cr x 30 cr + ($550 fees assuming 2 courses per semester x 5 semesters) = $19,220
[2] For 2018-2019, $1044.24/cr + $15 online fee/cr – $478.83 out-of-state waiver = $580/cr x 36 cr = $20,895
[3] For 2018-2019, $695/cr x 32 cr = $22,240. Does not include per course fees.
[4] For 2018-2019, $653.92/cr +$40/cr online x about 33 cr = $22,900
[5] For 2018-2019, $731/cr  x 30 credits + ($100/per online course x10 courses) = $22,930
[6] For 2018-2019, $2205 per 3-cr course x 2 courses/semester x 6 semesters (i.e 36 credits) = $26,460 (fewer or more courses per semester will change the overall cost). Hybrid program.
[7] For 2018-2019, $726 /cr x 40 cr = $29,040 plus probable graduate professional fees
[8] For 2018-2019, $454/cr x 45 credits = $20,430 but total suggested with fees is $31,400.
[9] For 2018-2019, assuming two courses per semester = (($886 /cr x 6cr) + $189 tech fee) x 6 semesters (I.e. total of 36 credits) = $33,030
[10]For 2018-2019, $3,782/course + $200 tech fee/course x 10 courses = $39,820
[11] For 2018-2019, $865 per credit hour and 52 credits required = $44,980
[12] For 2018-2019, $1,863/cr  x 28 cr = $52,164.
